It is the Prefecture of the Department Drome (26).
part of the region Auvergne Rhone Alpes.

The city lies on the left bank of the river Rhone
about 100 km south of Lyon
and 43 km north of Montelimar
along the Paris to Marseilles TGV line.

A ferry beaot leaving from Ouistreham
connects the city to Portsmouth / England
It takes 2 h30 to drive from Valence to Paris.

The city is sourrounded by several mountain ranges
near the Massif Central
